Our locals write songs and create art inspired by this special little town—and once you visit, you’ll understand why. With its peaceful lakes, towering oaks draped in Spanish moss, historic homes, and the quiet beauty of old citrus groves, Melrose, Florida is far more than just “the town you drive through on the way to Gainesville.” (Go Gators!)
Melrose is the kind of place people grow up in—and later return to. Once a thriving merchant town known for its citrus industry, Melrose faced devastation when a historic freeze wiped out a promising harvest and changed the town’s future. What remained, however, was something even more enduring: beautiful land, pristine lakes, and a vibrant culture that continues to welcome visitors and residents alike.
Today, Melrose blends small-town charm, local art, outdoor recreation, and a welcoming community spirit that has stood the test of time.
Land of Lakes
At the heart of Melrose is Lake Santa Fe, the crown jewel of the area, spanning more than 5,850 acres of clear water and scenic shoreline. But it’s just the beginning. Nearby lakes like Lake Rosa, Lake Melrose, Lake Swan, Lake Winnott, and Lake Alto are part of the network of beautiful waterways that surround our community.
With so many stunning lakes to explore, it’s easy to see why Melrose has earned the nickname “The Beautiful City of Lakes.” Even if we’re technically not a “city”… just a small town… the natural beauty here feels anything but small.
Whether you’re boating, fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoying the view, Melrose’s lakes are a big part of what makes this place so special.
